MAMAFAKA’S WORK

Sharing some of the late Mamafaka’s work.

RIP MAMAFAKA

96d8afb3becf66986e54aba99b487d702c4f24

When I visited Thailand for my wedding begin january 2013, I have discovered an amazing Thai graphic designer/illustrator who goes by the name Mamafaka. He is the creator of Mr. HellYeah the hairy one-eyed monster. I really liked the whole thing he was doing with his drawing skills. He was into stuff like, clothing, toys, illustrations, furniture, murals and exhibitions. In a very short time managed to get himself clients like Vans, Converse, Vespa and Ripcurl just to name a few. Back in june I have contacted him for a project in 2014 and we have a nice conversation. He also won a slew of awards and is considered the leader of a new generation of Thai artist. Since then I have followed him on serveral social media platforms. I always had enjoyed his post and yes he is a regular poster. Until the last couple of months it became very quiet. Today I have learned that Mamafaka has passed away (age 34) in september 2013 in a swimming accident in Phuket. Maybe I am late, but all my love and support goes to his family and friends. Rest in power, you will be missed Mamafaka.

Books: Well well well

I have mentioned earlier in my post about Job Wouters aka Letman. Gestalten has published a book with an assorted collection of Letman’s work. Truly amazing and inspiring work of typo combined with illustrations Check out some of it’s content.

AI WEIWEI – NEVER SORRY

Saw the documentary about Ai Weiwei, the artist, activist, architect, teacher and much more. Very inspirational stuff.

Some info about him:
Ai Weiwei is an artist and a social activist. His work encompasses diverse fields including fine arts, curating, architecture, and social criticism. Born in Beijing in 1957, he moved to Xinjiang with his family between 1960 and 1976. Subsequently he relocated to the United States in 1981 and lived there until 1993. He currently resides and works in Beijing.

On April 3, 2011, Ai was secretly detained by the police for 81 days at the Beijing Capital International Airport while on his way to board a flight to Hong Kong. He was released on bail on June 22, 2011 upon fabricated tax charges. Although the bail was lifted after a year, the authorities have not returned his passport and he remains prohibited from travelling outside China.

Letman

In my opinion one of the best graphic/typo artists in the world. Amsterdam-based illustrator Job Wouters, who works under the pseudonym Letman. In addition to commissioned designs for publications including New York Times Magazine, Playboy, It’s Nice That, and Creative Review and brands such as Audi, Heineken, Dries Van Noten, Tommy Hilfiger, Eastpak, and Universal.

Letman is internationally known for his trailblazing synthesis of illustration and lettering. He not only creates masterful decorative letters and typefaces, but also pioneers work that is a hybrid of graphic design, screen printing, graffiti, illustration, and painting.
